Illness, Injury, and Co-Pays Galore

My Thanksgiving post will have to wait a bit.  Over the past three days I have spent $105.00 on co-pays for various doctors caring for my boys.  It started on Saturday, when I decided Hank's lingering cough seemed to be getting worse.  Turns out he has bronchitis so the doctor gave us an antibiotic and we were on our way.

Sunday morning, Hank started throwing up around 6 a.m. and couldn't keep any food or drink down for most of the day.  For most kids, it isn't too big of an issue, but for a kid with diabetes it becomes a much bigger deal.  I've feared that day since he first was diagnosed and we were warned about the dangers of the dreaded sick day.  Since he couldn't keep anything down, we monitored his sugars every hour to make sure he didn't go too low.  He was able to suck on hard candies and we avoided any real scares.  After overcoming that night, I felt relieved to have the experience under my belt.  I was even more encouraged today when we met with his endocrinologist.  I love him by the way.  He spent the majority of the appointment praising me for excellent care for Hank.  He was quite impressed with my meticulous glucose records from the last 2 months.  His A1C score was 7.1 which is awesome.

We came home, ate some dinner and headed over to the Royster's for Colby's birthday party.  We were there about 5 minutes when I heard a terrible crash followed by a scream from Max.  He had fallen into a chair and hit his head really hard.  Knowing Mino like I do, I thought it would be just another bruise to add to his collection.  Boy was I wrong.  Once I saw blood gushing from his forehead I knew another doctor visit was in our future.  Randy and I raced to the Instacare where they quickly decided to do stitches to close the wound.  Max had calmed down by the time the doctor came in.  Here is the scene pre-stitches.

The doctor warned us that it wouldn't be fun.  I knew Max would be strapped down and multiple shots of lidocaine to the head would be given.  As they wrapped him up in a straight jacket looking contraption, I was amazed at how calm Max remained.  Max was still and silent as the doctor gave him the shots.  He couldn't believe how tough Max was.  He didn't even flinch as he got his 4 stitches.  What a little stud.  He was eager to get back to the party for some cake and ice cream and seemed pretty unfazed by the whole ordeal.  I think Hank was more traumatized than Max!

I hate to say it but something tells me this won't be the last time Max gets stitches!  Through all our doctors visits I feel like I can handle just about anything now.  Bring it on, things don't appear to be settling down any time soon!  I think they need to invent a punch card for co-pay's...buy 10 get one free.

I'm running out of responses to your frequent calamities!! Man- if you weren't a seasoned pro of a parent- you are after the last couple of months! Sheesh!

Max is a total stud and I have no doubt that he'll be showing all of our other boys the ropes of getting stitches at one time or another!!

Maybe they could throw a free meal in too with your punch card! I'd be on board with that! FEED ME!

Way to go Max! We were all so impressed by his calmness after the ordeal. I even think he liked showing off his battle wound once he got back. So glad it wasn't anything worse! And so glad Hank is doing so well. You and Randy are awesome parents!
